Make sure your car is winter proofed!
Winter is definitely on its way, we have already had a few occasions where we needed to shutter ourselves in the workshop to keep the biting cold out!
Ice, rain, sleet, snow, fog - these are all conditions that make driving that bit harder, and we all should really be taking extra care to ensure our cars are winter proof before any really bad weather hits (here's hoping it doesn't!)
So, what should you be looking out for?
Tyres - You should ensure that your tyres have the legal tread depth and make sure you regularly check your tyre pressures (at least every 2 weeks)
Windscreen Wipers - It is important to have perfect vision whilst driving. To ensure you can see as best as possible in poor weather, check the condition of your windshield wipers, do they clear the screen fully and properly? If not, they might be due for a change. Also, check you wiper fluid levels regularly and top up as necessary, it's amazing how much of this you can get through once the salt hits the roads!
Lights - It might sound too obvious, but truly how often do we get out of the car and check that all of lights, including fog lights, are working? It's a really good idea to do these checks now and again during autumn/winter as we rely on the lights so much more with the longer hours in darkness. It's also a good idea to have a good look at your light casings - are these looking foggy and less than clear? This can have a massive effect on how your lights work, so if they aren't looking good, do get them sorted.
Oil Levels - check these regularly to ensure you have the correct level.
Coolant and Anti-Freeze - check you coolant levels and top up your Anti-Freeze if required. Anti-Freeze is really important to stop the water in your car freezing and causing all sorts of issues.
Battery - The last thing you want is a breakdown with a dead battery. If your car regularly struggles to start in the mornings, then it may be worth getting it checked as to whether you need a new one!
So, now your car is in tip top shape ready for what winter throws at it, let's think about the typical delays etc. that we often experience when bad weather hits. Here are some ways you can pre-plan for the delays and ensure that if you do get caught up for a few hours you will be able to take it all in your stride.
A blanket, rug or sleeping bag.
Ice scraper and de-icer.
Torch and batteries.
Snacks – chocolate or cereal bars.
Your car insurance and breakdown cover details.
In car phone charger or power pack.
Air activated hand warmers.
If you are heading out on a long trip and its super cold, it may be worth considering also packing the following items;
A warm winter coat, scarf, hat, gloves and warm clothes.
A flask of hot drink.
Phew! Well with all that sorted, we can hopefully all safely make it through to Spring!
